The Season of Lent

     The season of
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is a time of solemn reminder about our mortality and the weakness of human nature.  Ash Wednesday leads us into Lent, a time established in the early church as the 40 days of intense preparation before new Christians were baptized into the church at Easter.  The 40 days are modeled on the 40 years the Israelites spent wandering in the wilderness with Moses, and, several thousand years later, the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness in preparation for his ministry.

Jesus fasts and is tempted in the wilderness

Preparation for Easter during Lent can take many forms.  Traditionally, the practice of fasting has been an important part of Lent, helping us to remember, each time we feel hungry, our reliance on God.  Today, many people choose to take on other spiritual disciplines during Lent, such as prayer, journal-writing, Bible Study, and sacrificial giving.
